Possible Dangers
Opponents not only claim that ear candling is ineffective, they believe it is unnecessary as the ear needs wax and naturally cleanses itself. It could potentially be dangerous if hot wax dripped is into the ear. One woman reported a long, expensive and painful recovery after hot wax dripped on her eardrum, most likely because the candle was burned too low. The American Academy of Otolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat specialists) discourage the practice. However, besides home experiments reported by individuals in testimonials, there is little or no scientific inquiries into the effectiveness of ear candling one way or the other. It has successfully been used for hundreds of years by many different peoples, but this is not considered significant evidence by the medical community and the FDA. Of course, this is typical of “alternative” health care.
Ear candling is not a cure-all, but many people have benefited from the alleviation of minor cases of ear problems. At UMS, however, we are not health care professionals. As with all consumption of physical health products, we encourage you to be pro-active with your health care, educating yourself in the research and history, and using the resources that you have come to trust, be that your instincts, family physician, etc. We caution you to learn how to use ear candles correctly if you are going to use them. Accidents occur mostly by burning the candle too far down or mishandling the candle point in the ear canal. Also, realize that as a metaphysical practitioner, your insurance nor your degree will cover any kind of lawsuit if you incorporate ear candling into your practice. We suggest you use it only on yourself and your friends. However, teaching a class in ear candling might be the best way to go if you would like to introduce ear candling to your community. Good luck and best wishes for health and well-being. Enjoy your newfound technique for another route to health!
Ear candling definitely has its risks. Homeopathic Candling can be good when practiced the right way. Olive oil seems to be a fireless option for loosening ear wax. Oils seem to mix with waxes unlike water, olive or other oil can be mixed in to a homogeneous mixture. Dark ear wax may signify a greater amount of pollutants in the environment around you. That darker wax must be taken out somehow. You must get the wax out of the ear because any toxins can be potentially harmful to the internal organs of the ear. The membrane tympanic in side the ear must be kept free of debris or it can greatly reduce ones ability to hear. The tympanic membrane along with the basilar membrane helps propagate sound into the right places inside the ear. Perforation or ruptured membranes can lead to cochlea dysfunction. The eustachian tube is another common blockage site. You would not want to break any of the tiny ossicle bones in your ear or you will have no sense of volume.
